Your strategy isn't broken. Your routine is.

Building Consistency Through Routine and Discipline

You don't have a strategy problem. You have a Tuesday problem, a Thursday problem, a "I skipped my routine because I woke up late" problem.

Here's something we don't talk about enough: the traders who make consistent money aren't the ones with the best strategy. They're the ones who show up the same way, every single day, regardless of how they feel about it. Your edge doesn't care if you're tired, distracted, or convinced today is going to be different. It only works if you actually follow it.

The reason routine matters so much comes down to a simple truth about how our brains work under pressure. When you're staring at a live chart with real money on the line, you are not your best, most rational self. You're running on instinct, emotion, and whatever mental state you walked in with. A routine isn't busywork - it's a way of making your good decisions automatic, before the market has a chance to hijack them. Pre-market prep, a checklist, your journaling habit - these aren't chores. They're the scaffolding that holds up your discipline when your emotions want to knock it down.

And here's the part that trips people up: consistency doesn't feel exciting. It feels boring. It feels like doing the same five things before every session when you'd rather just get to the trading part. But that boredom is the point. The traders who last are the ones who've made peace with repetition, because they know results come from process, not from chasing a feeling.

So here's something you can do today, not someday. Build a five-minute pre-market checklist. Nothing fancy - just three or four questions you ask yourself before you take a single trade. Something like: What's my bias for today and why? What's my max risk if I'm wrong? What would make me walk away from the screen? Write it down. Physically, on paper or in a note on your phone. Then use it before your next session, no exceptions.

If you already journal, add one line at the end of today's entry: did I follow my routine, yes or no? That single line, tracked over weeks, will tell you more about your consistency than any P&L ever could.

You're not trying to become a robot. You're trying to build a version of yourself that shows up reliably, even on the days you don't feel like it. That's not restrictive - that's freedom. Because when the routine is solid, you don't have to rely on willpower or mood. You just follow the process, and let the process do its job.

Start small, stay honest with yourself, and give it time. Consistency compounds - in your habits first, and eventually in your results.
